Papo de Budega talked with Kaz Yamashita, Director, Licensing and General Administration of the Toei Animation. He and president company had come to Brazil in 2007. With more time, Yamashita said us about Brazilian market and some titles.
Does Toei knew about the dubbing problems in Saint Seiya Hades Chapter Inferno and how much the studio exchange disliked Brazilian fans?
We have heard the fans’ feedback a little bit, but don’t know how big the fans against the dubbed version. Please let us know the issue and we would like to solve such issue or future dubbing.
Saint Seiya it’s not a big success in U.S.A. , one of the biggest markets of the world. The delay in Saint Seiya production occurred due to the failure in U.S.A.?
I don’t know the exact reason. When we launch the show in each market, we always believe it would succeed, but sometimes didn’t. We don’t think there was a delay in production of English version.
Does Toei believes that selling anime in phases (52 episodes then 52) can be a problem or confuse the licensing? Is it not better to sell bigger lots?
If possible, we would like to license the entire show at one time. But as you know, sometimes the episode licensed would be 52, 70 or could be over 200, due to the broadcaster’s budget or timing of the production.
How doe Toei sees the posture of fansubers and other not official exhibition vehicles?
Do you mean how we feel against fun-sub version on the internet?
Fansubers on internet. But, in Brazil , it has sale of DVDs “not official” in stores. How do Toei sees the posture this stores that sales pirates DVDs?
If we find such illegal DVDs sold at stores, we investigate first and discuss with our Tokyo HQ to take legal action. At the same times, we always seek for the opportunities of official license.
In Brazil, censorship creates a schedule to the TV programs according to the hours of exibition. Most of the Toei titles, however, are rejected by the censors. Does the company know about that? What does Toei do to avoid this kind of problem?
We don’t think most of our titles were rejected by Brazilian censorship because we could license Dragonball, Saint Seiya, Sailormoon or Digimon before. We understand the Censorship is a challenge to lots of animation studios like us. Along with free TV networks, we are working on other outlets to exhibit our shows such as cable channels or DVDs.
The Digital TV system in Brazil (HDTV) is similar with the one used in Japan . Does Toei already thinks about developing strategies for the system (implemented in December 3th) or is it still too early?
We have started providing some TV series in Japan in a HD format.
Toei has offices in Europe, Phillipino and United States . The company have intentions to open an office in Latin America?
Sorry I don’t have any idea.
Slam Dunk was shown in the Animax Asia channel. Do you know if the anime will arrive at Latin America Animax?
I don’t know. We hope can work with Animax Latin America with our titles as many as possible.
National Kid, Tokkei Winspector, Bishoujo Kamen Poitrine and Kamen Rider had been shown in Brazil some years ago. Does Toei retain the rigths and tapes from those original brazilian dubbings?
Those live shows are not our titles.
One Piece could have “substituted” Dragon Ball Sagas success, but the 4Kids’ edition “killed” anime in American continent. How does Toei can revert the situation and malke profits with One Piece on the region?
We would like to exhibit the original version but sometimes it is difficult with the requirements from each local TV network or government. Sometimes uncut DVD.
Do you know when One Piece anime will finish?
No. I don’t have any idea.
Dragon Ball Sagas is still Toei’s biggest commercial success? Or there are other important titles in the commercial focus?
Yes. DB series is our biggest success. Currently, Pretty Cure is getting expanding in the international market. Saint Seiya and Digimon are also some our popular franchise to the international market.
Is it in the company’s intends to participate of the commemoration of the Japanese Immigration Centenarian in Brazil?
At this moment, we don’t have a specific plan but we would like to think the possibility to work on the 100th anniversary from the 1st immigrant, not only introducing our titles.

O Papo de Budega conversou com Kaz Yamashita, gerente geral e diretor da Toei Animation. Ele e o presidente da companhia vieram ao Brasil no final de 2007. Com mais tempo, Yamashita falou um pouco mais do mercado brasileiro e alguns títulos.
Toei soube dos problemas relacionados a dublagem de Cavaleiros do Zodíaco: Hades – A Saga do Inferno? E quanto a troca de estúdio desagradou os fãs?
Nós ouvimos um pequeno número de fãs, mas não sabíamos que muitos fãs não gostaram da dublagem. Por favor, gostaríamos de saber de tais problemas para resolvê-lo em ocasiões futuras.
Cavaleiros do Zodíaco não foi um sucesso nos Estados Unidos, um dos maiores mercados do mundo. O atraso na produção de CDZ ocorreu devido ao não sucesso nos EUA?
Não sei o motivo exato… Quando lançamos um título em cada mercado, nós acreditamos sempre que terá sucesso, mas às vezes isso não acontece. Não acreditamos que o atraso da produção ocorreu por causa o mercado americano.
A Toei não acredita que as vendas em fases (52 episódios em 52) pode ser um problema ou atrapalha no licenciamento? Não seria melhor vender em grandes lotes?
Se possível, gostaríamos que um anime fosse ao ar todo de uma vez só. Mas, muitas vezes, as licenças acontecem de 53, 70 ou até um lote superior a 200 episódios, devido às exibições na televisões ou calendários de produção.
Como a Toei vê a postura dos fansubers e outros tipos de exibições não oficiais?
Você quer dizer fansubers de internet?
Fansubers de internet… Mas, no Brasil, existe a venda de DVDs piratas em lojas. Como a Toei enxerga a postura das lojas que vendem DVDs piratas?
Se encontrarmos DVDs ilegais vendidos em lojas, nós investigaremos e discutiremos com a Central em Tóquio para tentar uma ação judicial. Ao mesmo tempo, sempre tentaremos fincar as oportunidades de licença oficial.
No Brasil, a classificação etária (censura) criou horários para os programas de televisão. Muitos títulos da Toei, entretanto, foram rejeitados pela censura. O que a Toei pensa disso? A empresa acredita que isso é um problema?
Não acreditamos que maioria dos nossos títulos foram rejeitadas pela censura brasileira porque licenciamos Dragonball, Cavaleiros do Zodíaco, Sailormoon ou Digimon antes. Entendemos que a censura é um desafio para muitos estúdios de animação como nós. Juntamente com redes de TV aberta, TVs a cabo e empresas de DVDs, estamos trabalhando em outros mercados para expor nosso material.
O sistema de TV digital (HDTV) do Brasil é semelhante ao usado no Japão. A Toei já está trabalhando no desenvolvimento de estratégias para este novo sistema?
Começamos a trabalhar com algumas séries de televisão no formato HDTV.
A Toei tem escritórios na Europa, Filipinas e Estados Unidos. A companhia pretende abrir um escritório na América Latina?
Por hora, não tenho conhecimento disso…

Dragon Ball sagas ainda é o maior sucesso comercial da Toei? Ou já há outro anime importante no quesito comercial?
Sim… DB sagas é nosso maior sucesso. Atualmente, Pretty Cure está crescendo no mercado internacional. Cavaleiros e Digimon são algumas de nossas mais populares franquias no mercado internacional.
A empresa pretende participar da Comemoração do Centenário da Imigração Japonesa no Brasil?
Até o momento, não temos um plano específico, mas gostaríamos de pensar em uma possibilidade de atual no Centenário, não apenas com nossos títulos…
